New Multi-Dimensional Gas Chromatography System for Structure and Quality Control Analysis
Shimadzu Scientific Instruments’ new multi-dimensional gas chromatography system (MDGC) incorporates a “multi-Deans switch,” which increases separation power by combining two capillary columns of different selectivity for a more efficient separation of the target analytes from a complex sample matrix. The separation of the analytes from the matrix interferences allows more positive identification and improved quantitative analysis of the target analytes. The key hardware component of the MDGC system is a capillary-optimized pressure switching device (“multi-Deans switch”) that directs flow from the first column directly to a monitor detector or to the second column and detector. This device has no moving parts but is based on the use of an advanced electronic flow controller to balance the pressure on both sides of the transfer line between columns. Multiple heart-cuts can be made from the first column without shifting the retention times of compounds eluting after the cuts, greatly simplifying method development.

Next Generation Capillary Electrophoresis System Featuring 10¥ Superior Sensitivity
Agilent Technologies Inc. introduces its next generation Agilent 7100 Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) system, providing at least 10 times more sensitivity than any other commercial CE instrument. The new 7100 system also requires 25% less bench space, weighs 30% less than its predecessor and uses less power. The superior sensitivity is a result of a new detector used in combination with proprietary extended light path capillaries or a high-sensitivity cell. The Agilent 7100 is 10–20 times more sensitive than other CE instruments and reverse-compatible to the previous Agilent CE platform, so existing methods can continue to be used. The instrument performs the full range of CE separation techniques, including capillary electrochromatography for fast separation of closely related compounds. Its standard replenishment system provides high-throughput for unattended operation and has been improved to use less buffer for the replenishment function. In addition to its enhanced productivity, reliability and ease of use, the internal pressure system and capillary cooler supports higher currents and/or larger capillary diameters to increase throughput and also to enable a wider range of applications. In addition, the system comes with a new Chemstation software with an easy-to-use graphical user interface and an improved method setup that minimizes start-up and training time.

Elsevier’s PharmaPendium™ Introduces the FDA Classic Collection
PharmaPendium, Elsevier’s online resource for authoritative preclinical, clinical and post-marketing drug information, has significantly expanded its coverage of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval documents with the launch of the FDA Classic Collection. This collection contains all available historical FDA approval documents up to and including those issued in 1991. The combination of PharmaPendium’s current FDA database and the FDA Classic Collection creates an entire searchable library of documents written by the FDA on the approval of drugs and their pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety. The FDA Classic Collection may be searched simultaneously with the current file (1992-present) or as a discrete database.

EXPRESSHT-ULTRA HPLC SYSTEM DELIVERS HIGH THROUGHPUT FOR BIOANALYSIS
Eksigent introduces the ExpressHT-Ultra HPLC system, providing short cycle times and high throughput for LC–MS studies of pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism. This new system is the latest offering in the company’s line of products for small molecule analysis. With cycle times as short as 60 seconds, the ExpressHT-Ultra can run six 96-well sample plates overnight. Running at a maximum pressure of 10,000 psi, the system enables the use of small particle stationary phases to deliver narrow peaks to the mass spectrometer. Employing columns with diameters of 1 mm or smaller, the Express HT-Ultra uses up to 95% less solvent per analysis than traditional HPLC systems.
