Scope
The Journal of Chromatographic Science is devoted to the dissemination of information concerning all methods of chromatographic analysis. The standard manuscript is a description of recent original research that covers any or all phases of a specific separation problem, principle, or method. In addition to regular research papers, “Technical Notes” are published. These are brief disclosures of new chromatographic concepts or practices or brief descriptions of novel apparatuses or techniques. “Expedited Papers” are those determined by our reviewers to be of interest to most chromatographers and requiring minimal revision. They are published in the next available issue. General comments on the content of the Journal are appropriate for “Letters to the Editor,” as are comments on the work of specific authors, in which case the authors will be allowed to reply. The editors encourage readers to communicate questions and criticisms inspired by the Journal.

Form and Style
The American Chemical Society’s ACS Style Guide is generally used to determine spelling, hyphenation, style, usage, and abbreviation. Standardized, universally recognized terms and abbreviations should be used. Special nomenclature should be defined at the point of first use or listed in an appendix. Use consistent, SI-recommended units of measurement and give definitions for all terms. Define trade names and special symbols.

Abstract
Abstracts are required for all manuscripts. State the objectives of the study, the techniques used, and what was accomplished. The length should reflect the content of the manuscript, but should not exceed 200 words. Present tense should be used throughout the abstract.

Text
CConsult the publication for general format. Indicate sections with side headings. Keep all information pertinent to a particular section—e.g., do not present results in the Experimental section. Avoid repetition. Do not use footnotes for descriptive or explanatory information that can be incorporated into the text. Equipment and methods should be described in sufficient detail to permit other chromatographers to duplicate the results, but information that is common knowledge to others in the field should not be included.

Figures
Figures All figures should be cited in order in the text. Figures will be reproduced in the Journal exactly as submitted and must be professionally rendered original drawings or sharp, glossy prints. If structures are given in the manuscript, original drawings must be provided. All lines, lettering, and numbering must be sharp and unbroken. Use black text for all letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use a typewriter to letter illustrations. Dot matrix printing is also unacceptable. Illustrations should be designed to fit the width of one journal column (8.3 cm). The width of original drawings should be twice the final published size to allow for 50% reduction. Letters and symbols should be approximately 4-mm tall on the original art. See the The ACS Style Guide for more detailed information on the preparation of figures. All graphs, diagrams, chromatograms, and photographs must be numbered consecutively on the front with Arabic numerals in the order of citation. Include all figure legends together on a separate page.

Tables
Prepare tables in a consistent form, each appropriately titled and numbered consecutively with Roman numerals in the order of citation in the text. Type each table on a separate page, and collate at the end of the text in front of the figures.

Equations
Number equations consecutively using Arabic numerals. Place superscripts and subscripts accurately, indicate capital letters and italics, and distinguish between characters that may be confused—e.g., number one and lower-case “L” or zero and upper-case “O”. Avoid superscripts that may be confused with exponents. Variables should be in italics.

References
All references should appear at the end of the paper and should be cited in numerical order in the text. Reference numbers in the text should be enclosed within parentheses and placed on the line. Descriptive or explanatory (footnote) material is not given a reference number. Use abbreviations as given in The ACS Style Guide or the International Serials Catalogue. Include titles with all journal articles. The following are forms and examples for citing references:

Journals: first author’s initials followed by the last name; additional authors (listed as they appear in the original work) with initials followed by last names; title of article without quotation marks, only the first letter of the first word capitalized; abbreviated title of journal, underscored for italics; volume number, followed by a colon; beginning and ending page numbers; and year of publication in parentheses.

Example:
19. K. Jinno and M. Kuwajima. Microcomputer-assisted liquid chromatographic separation system: application to toxic compounds identification in poisoned human fluids. J. Chromatogr. Sci. 27: 57–62 (1989).

Books: first author’s initials followed by the last name; additional authors; title of book, underscored for italics; volume and/or edition number; editor’s initials followed by last name and the abbreviation Ed. publisher; city and state or country of publication; year of publication; and page numbers or chapter.

Example:
22. L.R. Snyder and J.J. Kirkland. Introduction to Modern Liquid Chromatography, 2nd ed. R.H. Thompson, A.S. Pereira, and N.D. Meyer, Eds. John Wiley & Sons, New York, NY, 1980, pp. 143–44.

Unpublished works: This type of reference includes material “in press” (that is, formally accepted for publication), theses, and dissertations. Do not include material submitted for publication but not formally accepted.

Example:
8. E.J. Levy and J.Q. Walker. Model molecular thermometer: a standardization method, Part II. J. Chromatogr. Sci., in press.

Patents: initials and last name of person who applied for the patent; country where application was filed; patent number; and year in parentheses.

Example:
1. S.T. Preston, U.S. Patent 123456 (1987).

Review Procedure
All submissions except those sent as “Letters to the Editor” are subject to review by two or more independent reviewers selected by the editor(s). Authors may suggest reviewers. The reviewers are asked to indicate the paper’s degree of interest to JCS readers and whether the manuscript should be published without change; with major or minor revision; or not at all. A request for a revised re-submission of a rejected manuscript may also be made by the editor.

Notification
Manuscripts are acknowledged upon receipt. Each author is kept informed of delays in the review process and receives formal notification of the status of his or her submission after reviewers have commented upon it. If a manuscript is deemed unsuitable for publication, the author will be promptly notified and the original copy of the paper returned. The author of an accepted manuscript is notified of the schedule for publication and the approximate date galley proofs will be mailed.

Requests for Revision
Authors are often asked to submit revised manuscripts incorporating the suggestions and recommendations of the reviewers. The editors reserve the right to submit a revision to the original reviewers for approval before accepting it for publication. Changes made in accordance with the reviewers, as well as reasons for not incorporating suggestions, should be outlined in detail in the cover letter accompanying the revised manuscript.

Author’s Proofs
Preliminary page proofs are sent to the corresponding authors. The author should correct only typographical or factual errors and fax, email, or telephone his or her corrections (or approval to publish without corrections) by the deadline date, which is usually 3 to 5 days after receipt of proofs. Failure to respond will delay publication of the article. Final page proofs are not customarily sent to the authors. Responsibility for accuracy of the published manuscript lies solely with the author.

Page Charges
There are no page charges. Authors receive complimentary copies of the issues in which their articles appear. Reprints, in quantities of 100 or more, can also be purchased through the Journal.

Publication Time
Manuscripts requiring only minor revision may be published within six months of submission. The average time before publication is two months after a manuscript or its revision is deemed acceptable. If possible, manuscripts accepted as “Expedited Papers” are published within eight weeks.

Chromatography Problem Solving and Troubleshooting
The editors welcome questions from readers regarding equipment and application techniques. Questions should be sent to Managing Editor, Journal of Chromatographic Science, P.O. Box 48312, Niles, IL 60714; or e-mailed to manage.ed@j-chrom-sci.com, and should include a name and affiliation.
