LETTER TO THE
EDITOR: Method Development for Cortisol and Cortisone by Micellar
Liquid Chromatography Using Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate: Application
to Urine Samples of Rugby Players
Martin Fenske
Department of Animal Physiology, NW I, University of Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Germany
A recent article in this journal reported
on urinary free cortisol (F) and cortisone (E) in rugby players
. Izquierdo-Hornillos et al. stated, “it could be interesting
to assess the F–E ratio for the useful prediction of
abnormality of their use in the doping test”. They developed
and applied a sensitive micellar liquid chromatographic method
and measured urinary free cortisol (UFF) and cortisone (UFE)
excretion in rugby players before and after the stress of a
match. With respect to UFE excretion, values give tenuous information
at best because the authors did not control the fluid intake
and urine output during the period of urine collection.
