Method Development for the Quantitation of Trace Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons from Water Via Solid-Phase Extraction with Supercritical Fluid Elution
D.C. Messer and L.T. Taylor

The focus of this work is the quantitation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water at low parts-per-billion levels. The analytes are deposited onto a solid-phase extraction disk and eluted with a supercritical fluid. Initial studies investigate the proper method of quantitation (i.e., relative versus absolute). These studies are followed by optimization of the supercritical fluid elution in relation to time, temperature, flow rate, and pressure, while maintaining quantitative recoveries and high precision. From this effort, a three-step, 27-min supercritical fluid elution method is developed. This method employs a chamber temperature of 80°C and a liquid flow rate of 2 mL/min and achieves an average recovery of 99% with a relative standard deviation of 4.6% for 16 PAHs.
